Lost in the Klamath River basinGot off to a smooth start on the Hornburg's "Discovery to Alaska". So smoothly that we couldn't stand it anymore and turned off Hwy 1 to a little known trail and discovered the northern California coast, "The Land Rover Way", on dirt. We chose a classic back road trail lined with giant Redwoods and framed in fog. The trail began with a steep climb and a sense of adventure, as we paused only to sample the local blackberries and the scenic overlooks along the way. We set up camp above the fog-enshrouded coastline, only to hear the sound of the
thundering waves and the bark of the sea lions 1100 feet below; thus far our only alarm clock on this rugged yet tranquil coast.

Dwarfed by the GiantsAs we head north, the Monterey Pine is replaced with Redwoods and the density of homes are slowly supplanted with tree lined forests. We leave the oceanscape behind and turn inland to chase the giant rivers of the northwest, in search of the ever elusive, yet endangered stealhead trout. Our first river of choice is the only remaining undammed and uncut watershed in California, the Smith River.
